Sclerotherapy is the injection of chemical agent directly into the diseased veins to sclerose the vein and prevent blood from flowing through them. It is used to treat:
The injected solution irritates the lining of the vein which allows the vein walls to scar together when compressed, effectively eliminating them from circulation. Eventually the vein becomes scar tissue and fades away. Sclerotherapy is done as office based procedure, requires o local anesthetic and is essentially painless. Sclerotherapy can be done on veins that are visible as well as veins thar are not. The veins that are not visible are usually incompetent perforating veins which require ultrasound guidance to treat. Sclerotherapy often follows the successful completion of the VNUS Closure procedure but is also used as a primary treatment of spider veins and varicose veins in patients who do not have reflux insufficiency.
